Long Distance Relationship Gifts That Get Worn
A good share of our couple orders ship to two different addresses. We have been making these since 2018, and over that time we have built up a fairly clear picture of which long distance gifts get used and which end up in a drawer.
What works
The gifts that last are the ones that fit into an ordinary day. Something you see when you make coffee. Something you touch without thinking about it. Grand gestures are nice once. Small daily reminders are what actually carry a relationship across a time zone.
Six ideas, from people who have tried them
1. A pair of matching bracelets with each other's name
This is the one we make, so take it with that in mind. You wear their name in Morse code, they wear yours. Nobody else can read it, which is the point. The cord is thin nylon and water resistant, so it stays on in the shower and at the gym rather than being taken off and forgotten. We make them as a matching couple set, and if you want them to arrive at two addresses, just tell us in the order notes.
2. A shared playlist that only one of you adds to each week
Free, and it works. Alternate weeks. The rule is one song, no explanation. The explanation happens on the next call.
3. A book you both read at the same pace
Two copies, a chapter a week, and a running conversation about it. It gives you something to talk about that is not logistics or how tired you both are.
4. A handwritten letter that arrives by post
Slow, cheap and completely different from a text. Write it, post it, do not mention it. Let it turn up.
5. A single bracelet with a date
Not every couple wants matching jewellery. A personalized Morse code bracelet with the date you met, or the date the distance ends, is quieter. It looks like a plain beaded bracelet to everyone else.
6. A local thing from where you are
Coffee from the cafe near your flat. The chocolate bar they cannot get where they live. It says: here is a piece of my day.
What tends not to work
Big framed photos, anything that needs charging, and anything that needs both of you online at the same moment. Time zones kill scheduled gifts.
A note on sizing when you cannot measure a wrist
Our bracelets are one size with a sliding closure, adjustable up to about 28 cm. You do not need to ask for a wrist measurement, which matters when the surprise is half the gift.
